Two Officers Attacked During Protest, One Seriously Injured
Brutal Bottle Assault Leaves Officer Hospitalised
Chaos erupted as two police officers were injured during a protest. One officer was smashed with a bottle, suffering a deep slash to his face. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
Police Federation Slams Violence
Stu Berry, Chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Federation, condemned the savage attack. “We witnessed appalling scenes this afternoon – police officers are not punchbags for people protesting their cause,” he said.
Berry emphasised that most football fans support peaceful protest. But those few who turned violent “soured those efforts” and must be tracked down and punished.
Support for Injured Officers
“Our thoughts are with our injured officers this evening and we hope the media can give our members the recognition they deserve.”
Berry added: “Hard-working police officers should be able to go home safe after their shifts, not rushed to hospital. We will demand a full review of today’s operational risk assessment and public order resources to protect our members better.”
