Pregnant woman and unborn baby killed in shock Eltham crash involving unmarked police car

Horrific Collision on the A20

A tragic crash in Eltham has claimed the lives of a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child. The smash happened around 6.15pm on Thursday near the A20 and Kidbrooke Park Road junction.

Police confirmed the 38-year-old woman died from her injuries. Her next of kin have been informed.

Eyewitnesses Claim Police Car Was on Wrong Side of Road

Witnesses allege an unmarked police car was racing on the wrong side of the road before it collided with the woman’s vehicle as she turned into Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre.

“Four police cars had their lights on, speeding like mad down the road. One hit her car, and it flipped three times,” said a plumber who saw the crash. “The car was badly smashed up.”

Another bystander described the unmarked black Volvo police car with blue lights and siren blaring. The woman’s blue car flipped multiple times, landing upright after smashing across the pavement.

IOPC Launches Independent Probe

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is now investigating the fatal collision. Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry of Greenwich police expressed his sympathy:

“My heart goes out to the woman’s family and friends. The IOPC is leading the investigation and we will fully cooperate.”

The IOPC confirmed the investigation is at an early stage and investigators are gathering evidence. Paramedics and fire crews attended the scene, but sadly both mother and baby died.

Officers Treated and Witnesses Urged to Speak Up

The two officers in the police car were taken to hospital but have since been discharged.

Authorities are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to contact IOPC investigators on 0300 303 5610 or email [email protected].

The Metropolitan Police and IOPC will provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
