Hero Cops Help Dad Deliver Baby on Southwark Street
PC Mia Kerr and PC Tom Palmer were on routine patrol in Southwark on Friday, 20 August, when a soon-to-be dad frantically flagged them down. His partner was going into labour right there on the street, aided only by a passing stranger.
Rapid Response Turns Into Emergency Delivery
PC Kerr quickly alerted control, and colleagues PC Kirsty Roberts and PC Ali Miah rushed to help. The officers soon realised they’d have to deliver the baby themselves.
- PC Kerr kept the mother calm and comforted.
- PC Palmer and PC Miah grabbed makeshift delivery supplies.
- Other officers held up blankets to shield the family from onlookers.
Guided by London Ambulance Service (LAS) on the phone, PC Roberts stayed cool under pressure. The delivery hit a snag when the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck.
“I was able to unwrap the cord and deliver the baby safely,” said PC Roberts.
Quick Thinking Saves the Day
When the baby boy was born, LAS instructed to tie the umbilical cord. Ingeniously, PC Roberts used the elastic from a medical face mask, which PC Kerr secured. They wrapped the newborn in blankets and police first aid bandages, awaiting the ambulance crew.
Officers Reflect on Unforgettable Moment
PC Kerr, from Southwark’s Emergency Response Team, said: “It was an overwhelming and incredible experience helping such a beautiful family in their time of need. Not what I expected at the start of my shift, but we acted quickly to keep mum and baby safe.”
PC Roberts added: “We’re used to emergencies, but this was a surprise. It was a privilege to deliver the baby — a moment I’ll never forget.”
All officers are calling this the highlight of their careers and hope to stay in touch with the family.
New Mum Praises the ‘Right Lovely People’
New mother Martina said: “It was the scariest and most wonderful experience ever. The right lovely people happened to be there. Their kindness made me feel so safe, I had no fear. We have no words to thank them enough.”
She added: “Our family will remember them for the rest of our life.”
