Tragic Crash in Eltham: Heavily Pregnant Woman and Unborn Baby Killed in Collision with Unmarked Police Car

Fatal Smash on A20 Rocks Eltham

A heavily pregnant woman and her unborn baby died in a horrific crash involving an unmarked police car in Eltham on October 17. The deadly collision happened at around 6:15pm on the A20 near Kidbrooke Park Road.

The unmarked police vehicle smashed into the woman’s car, sparking a fatal accident. This is the second tragedy on Kidbrooke Park Road this month, following the death of a pedestrian in a motorbike crash on October 1.

Emergency Crews Race to Scene

Emergency services—including the London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, Hazardous Area Response Team, and London’s Air Ambulance—were swiftly dispatched. The area was sealed off as crews battled to rescue the trapped victims.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Firefighters worked tirelessly to release two people trapped in the wreckage and made the scene safe. The Brigade arrived at 6:21pm and were on scene until 8:09pm. Firefighters from Eltham and Lewisham fire stations attended.”

Chaos and Heartbreak

The 38-year-old woman, who was the sole passenger, could not be saved. Both she and her unborn child tragically succumbed to their injuries. Two police officers and another man involved were rushed to a major trauma centre; the officers have since been discharged.

Witnesses described the crash as chaotic, with one saying her car was flipped multiple times. “It’s so sad. I’ve never seen so many police and ambulances in one place,” she said. Another bystander added, “We heard a loud bang and rushed out. My heart goes out to her family.”

Tributes and Investigation Underway

Flowers and candles have been laid at the crash site, with a heartbreaking note reading: “My deepest thoughts are with you and your baby, your family and friends. The most awful tragedy that should never have happened. Rest in peace beautiful and your baby.”

A family friend described the victim as “the most lovely and caring person ever.”

The road was closed for over 12 hours and reopened on October 18 with tyre skid marks and yellow road markings clearly visible at the scene.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a full investigation. They are appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage to come forward.
