Ex-Northamptonshire Police Chief Cleared of Fraud
Nick Adderley, former Northamptonshire Police Chief Constable, has been officially cleared of fraud allegations by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The accusations, linked to police vehicle maintenance during his time at Staffordshire Police, have now been dismissed.
The Fraud Probe Ends: No Case to Answer
Adderley, who led Northamptonshire Police from July 2018 until his dismissal in June 2024, was arrested in June 2023 alongside a fellow ex-Staffordshire officer and two public members. They faced investigations over alleged fraud involving the upkeep of police vehicles.
However, after a thorough probe directed by the IOPC, it was confirmed that Adderley “has no case to answer.” An IOPC spokesperson said:
“It has been decided that the former officer has no case to answer. The investigation, carried out under the direction of the IOPC, also found no indication of criminality on the part of the still-serving officer.”
The IOPC has now stepped back, handing the case back to Staffordshire Police for local review.
Dismissed for Lying About Military Service
Though cleared of fraud, Adderley’s police career ended in disgrace. In June 2024, he was dismissed after a five-day gross misconduct hearing. The panel found he lied about his military record, exaggerating his naval rank, length of service, and achievements.
Adderley’s repeated fabrications were ruled gross misconduct, leading to his immediate dismissal. Following this, the IOPC referred evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), whose decision on potential charges remains pending.
Mixed Reactions Sparked Across Social Media
The news of Adderley’s fraud clearance split opinion online. One user remarked:
“If he’s cleared of fraud, that’s one thing—but lying about military service is still a serious breach of trust.”
Others welcomed the fraud decision but expressed lingering doubts over his integrity and past conduct.
What’s Next?
While fraud claims have been dropped, Adderley’s reputation remains smudged by his military record deceit. The CPS’s next move on misconduct-related charges is eagerly awaited.
