Hotwalls Studios Set to Spark Creativity with New Deli ‘The Canteen’
Portsmouth’s buzzing creative hotspot, Hotwalls Studios, is gearing up for a summer 2016 launch with a fresh new eatery, The Canteen, from the team behind Southsea’s beloved tea-room, The Tenth Hole. Alongside the foodie addition, artists can now apply for studio spaces in this inspiring waterfront location.
A Historic Site Gets a Creative Makeover
Dating back to the 15th century, Hotwalls Studios once served as artillery barracks. Now, a £1.75million restoration funded by the government’s coastal communities fund, plus extra support from PUSH and Portsmouth City Council, is breathing new life into the historic monument.
Lucy Branson, co-owner of The Canteen, said: “We were blown away by the prestigious location and unique opportunity at the Hotwalls. Having established ourselves in the city, we wanted to expand with a new concept. The Canteen will be a deli-style café, serving top-quality coffee and freshly baked breakfasts and lunches. In summer, we’ll stay open until 9pm to serve small plates.”
She added: “As Portsmouth natives, we love the city’s vibrancy. There’s plenty happening and loads of room to grow.”
Artist Studios Open for Applications
Hotwalls Studios boasts 13 versatile studios, perfect for both emerging and established artists. With competitive rates and a prime Old Portsmouth location, they offer flexible leases from three months up to three years. Studios feature glazed fronts, inviting the public to engage directly with artists.
Artists attracted to creating physical artworks and selling direct from their spaces are encouraged to apply by 25 March.
Backed by the Council and Local Experts
Linda Symes, Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “This is an exciting phase. We’ve secured a fantastic deli-style café and artists can now apply for studio space. Hotwalls is unique — blending history with stunning waterfront views. With a thriving creative scene in Portsmouth, affordable studios like these are crucial.”
The studios sit within easy reach of Gunwharf Quays and Southsea, with great transport links close by.
Local contractors Mountjoy and architects ERMC are steering the project. ERMC’s Deniz Beck said: “Our goal is to make this iconic landmark a vibrant arts and crafts quarter, preserving its heritage while injecting new life.”
Mountjoy director Andy Flambard added: “Working on a scheduled monument and Grade I listed building within a tidal zone poses challenges, but with 25 years’ experience, we’re proud to help create jobs and support Portsmouth’s creative industries.”
