Tory Transport Minister Slams BBC Satire as ‘Completely Biased’
Government minister Huw Merriman has launched a scathing attack on the BBC’s satirical show, calling it “completely biased.” His tirade targeted BBC1’s The News Quiz, claiming the comedy was anything but balanced and heavily slanted against the Conservatives.
Muddled Mix-Up: Neil Buchanan or Neil Bucannan?
In a messy gaffe during a Sky News interview, Merriman appeared to confuse two TV personalities—mixing up Art Attack’s Neil Buchanan with the BBC’s social affairs reporter Michael Buchanan. He blamed “Neil Bucannan” for biased reporting on universal credit, despite muddling the names.
Tories Renew Attack Amid BBC Impartiality Row
Merriman’s criticism follows Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer admitting the BBC has shown bias at times—but failing to name solid examples. Merriman took aim at coverage of welfare reform, insisting one-sided reporting left out the government’s perspective:
“There was an individual there who would report on it, Neil Buchanan, who I always felt gave one side of the story and not the other side, which was the government side.”
The BBC Under Fire in Ongoing Culture War
As Conservative complaints pile up, the debate over the BBC’s impartiality heats up. Questions about the broadcaster’s role and responsibilities remain front and centre in this bitter culture clash.
