Man Dies After Police Called to Child Assault in South Norwood

A 45-year-old man has died following a serious incident in South Norwood, London, in the early hours of Sunday, February 16. The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after officers responded to reports of a child being assaulted at a High Street property.

Chaotic Scene on High Street

At 1:27 AM, police arrived at the address in SE25 and found the man in a medical emergency. He was highly agitated and resisted officers. Despite struggling, officers restrained him and immediately called paramedics.

When London Ambulance Service arrived, the man’s condition worsened while being taken to the ambulance. He was rushed to hospital but tragically pronounced dead despite medical efforts.

His next of kin have been informed, and police are probing the full circumstances surrounding his death.

Mandatory IOPC Referral as Investigation Begins

The Met Police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which investigates incidents where someone dies or suffers serious injury following police contact.

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is also reviewing the matter. A police spokesperson said:

“A referral in these circumstances is not an indication that officers are believed to have done anything wrong. It is a mandatory step when anyone dies or suffers serious injury following contact with the police or while in their custody.”

Commander’s Statement and Community Reaction

T/Commander Andy Brittain, overseeing the response, said:

“Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died. We will ensure they are fully supported.”

“I know the community in South Norwood will want reassurance that the incident was handled appropriately. The IOPC is conducting an independent investigation to provide that scrutiny.”

“We must also acknowledge the impact incidents like this have on the officers involved. They were responding to an emergency call involving a child in danger and faced a challenging situation.”

“No officer wants to be involved in an incident where someone loses their life, and we will ensure they get all the support they need.”

Local residents have expressed concern and are awaiting the outcome of the ongoing IOPC investigation.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Witnesses can contact the Metropolitan Police on 101, quoting incident reference 16/02/2025, or reach out anonymously via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
