Labour MP Suspended for Defying Party Over Farmers’ Inheritance Tax!

Farmers’ Champion Rebels Against Starmer’s Tax Clampdown

Markus Campbell-Savours, Labour MP for Penrith and Solway, has been suspended for voting against his own party’s crackdown on farmers’ inheritance tax. The rural Cumbria MP broke ranks in the Commons to back local farmers, ignoring Labour’s orders.

Campbell-Savours slammed the policy as unfair to hardworking farming families, not “wealthy land barons.” Critics say Labour missed the mark by targeting farmers while billionaires and rich celebs dodge tax on their estates.

Despite this opposition, the inheritance tax change squeezed through with a 145-vote majority. Campbell-Savours paid the price — stripped of the Labour whip, joining the growing list of rebels punished by Sir Keir Starmer’s iron discipline.

Lonely Rebel Amid Mass Labour Abstentions

While over 80 Labour MPs quietly abstained, Campbell-Savours stood alone against the tax hike alongside Tory rebels. His lonely “no” vote exposed a deep unease over the farming tax hike within the party’s ranks.

“There remain deep concerns about the proposed changes to agricultural property relief… many elderly farmers devastated at the impact on their family farms,” Campbell-Savours told the Commons.

“I was one of those Labour candidates reassuring constituents that relief wouldn’t be touched. That promise I can’t break, so I had to vote against the Budget resolution.”

Backbencher Puts Constituents Before Party

Campbell-Savours remains defiant, insisting his loyalty is first and foremost to his community. “I want to walk around my community knowing I did all I could for them,” he said, accepting suspension as the cost of standing up for farmers.

The Chancellor’s Budget did offer a small concession: unused agricultural property relief can now be transferred between spouses. But farmers argue the £1 million threshold for the new 20% tax on farm land is still far too low, threatening generations of family-owned farms.

Labour insiders confirm Chief Whip Jonathan Reynolds withdrew the whip on Wednesday, leaving Campbell-Savours as an independent MP pending any appeal.

Starmer’s Firm Stance on Rebels Exposes Party Divisions

  • Markus Campbell-Savours is the latest Labour rebel suspended for defying a strict three-line whip.
  • Over 80 Labour MPs abstained, signalling silent dissent but avoiding punishment.
  • The rebellion sheds light on growing tension between Labour’s leadership and its rural voter base.
  • Critics say the tax reforms unfairly target hardworking farmers, while the wealthy evade real scrutiny.

Campbell-Savours’ suspension highlights the political cost of putting voters before party bosses. His defiance has earned praise from farming communities but risks deepening Labour’s rural woes.

With protests mounting, Sir Keir faces a tricky choice: crack down hard or risk losing vital rural heartlands.
