Met Police Step Up Fines for Rule-Breakers in London

The Met has toughened up! Police officers will still try the 4 E’s—engage, explain, encourage—but when it comes to clear and serious breaches, fines are dropping faster than ever. Partygoers, unlicensed music lovers, and anyone at illegal gatherings can now expect a swift fine, not just the event organisers.

No Mask, No Mercy: Fines for Refusers

Forget chats and warnings for those flouting mask rules. If you’re out without a mask where it’s mandatory and have no valid excuse, you’re facing a fine – plain and simple. With the rules cutting down on “reasonable excuses” to leave home, Met cops will be hunting down anyone wandering about without a legit reason.

Crackdown on Rule-Breakers to Protect NHS

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist, leading the Met’s pandemic response, warned:

“After ten months of this pandemic, almost everyone knows the rules. A tiny few are still ignoring them, putting the NHS and lives at risk. Our job is to save lives, not keep explaining rules to people willfully breaking them.”

Since introducing a snappy new digital fines system less than a month ago, officers have issued more fines than in the whole of 2020 combined. The message is clear: the virus is spreading faster and officers won’t hesitate to enforce the rules.

Londoners Urged to Do Their Bit

Twist added:

“If this trend keeps up, our officers are ready to act hard and fast. Londoners must act now to slow the virus. Doing the right thing—staying home, wearing masks, not gathering—will save lives and speed up the day we can all live normally again.”

London’s law enforcers are teaming up with local councils to keep public spaces and shops in line. The crackdown is on—so think twice before breaking the rules. It’s up to all of us to stop the spread now.
