Met Police Under Fire for Failing Vulnerable Kids

A damning new report from His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) has slammed the Metropolitan Police’s child protection efforts. The watchdog revealed serious failings that put Britain’s most vulnerable children at risk.

Two Major Failings Exposed

  • Missing Kids Ignored: The Met is falling short in identifying and assessing risks when children go missing.
  • Shoddy Exploitation Probes: Investigations into criminal and sexual exploitation of children are weak and ineffective.

The report also called out the disturbing use of victim-blaming language by officers, warning it lets predators off the hook and leaves children exposed to harm.

Mayor of London Demands Urgent Reform

Commissioned by the Mayor, the report’s early release signals a crisis in child protection. HMICFRS demands the Met fix these issues by December 31, 2023, warning immediate action is critical.

His Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary Lee Freeman said: “The role of the police in protecting children from harm should not be understated. It is concerning that the Metropolitan Police’s current approach to child protection requires immediate attention.”

Met Vows to Clean Up Its Act

Commander Kevin Southworth, Lead for Public Protection, admitted the findings are “deeply concerning” but stressed ongoing changes. “Children are among the most vulnerable in our society, and I am deeply concerned by the HMICFRS’ findings that show that too often we are letting them down.”

He promised a sharper focus on children’s individual needs and closer partnerships with experts to overhaul protection efforts. The Met says it is committed to safeguarding London’s kids and fixing these serious flaws—fast.
