Just before midnight on Thursday, 22-year veteran Officer Richard Mendez and his partner Raúl Ortíz arrived at the airport’s parking garage for terminals D and E to start their shifts. Their routine patrol turned deadly when they caught a group breaking into a car.
Responding to smashed glass, the officers approached—but were met with gunfire. Mendez was hit multiple times in the upper torso; Ortíz took a bullet in the arm. Despite frantic efforts, Mendez died at the hospital, while Ortíz was released two days later.
Missing Gun Adds to the Mystery
