Notting Hill Carnival Returns with Massive Police crackdown
This weekend, London’s iconic Notting Hill Carnival is back, promising vibrant Caribbean culture and explosive street parties in West London. But there’s a serious twist — a huge police presence. Around 7,000 officers will patrol the event, which typically draws about a million revellers.
Police Brace for Trouble Amid Festival Fun
Commander Charmain Brenyah, the Met’s spokesperson for this year’s carnival, knows the event’s highs and lows firsthand. “Having grown up near Carnival, I have many happy memories,” she said. “That’s the experience I want everyone to enjoy this year.” But she warned about a darker side. “For a minority, Carnival is a chance to commit crime or spark violent confrontations.”
The heightened security comes after a rough couple of years, with over 500 arrests in the last two carnivals, including 15 stabbings — one fatal — and more than 125 assaults on police officers.
Heavy Hitters: What Police Are Bringing to the Booth
- Eyes peeled for violent troublemakers, ready to step in fast.
- Search powers deployed aggressively to confiscate weapons.
- Work with charity Safer Spaces to set up support zones for women and girls.
- A specialist Crowd Management Cell to monitor crowd density and movement.
Commander Brenyah also urged anyone witnessing or suffering sexual assaults in the crowds to report immediately to officers. The Met is working alongside City of London Police and British Transport Police for extra muscle this year.
On High Alert but Ready for a Safe, Fun Carnival
Although no specific threats linked to recent London unrest have surfaced, cops are ready to pounce on any signs of trouble. The Met has teamed up with Crimestoppers to offer an anonymous tip line for potential disruptions.
As the city gears up for this world-famous bash, police urge attendees to stay alert, follow safety rules, and cooperate — ensuring the Carnival remains a joyous celebration of culture, not chaos.
