Hero Cop Saves Dog and Owner From Icy Death Trap
Freezing weather has turned local lakes into deathtraps, and one quick-thinking cop has risked it all to pull a woman and her dog from icy waters. Officers are now warning residents to stay safe and respect frozen waters across the county.
Drama at Silverwood Nature Reserve
On December 12, officers from the Off Road Bike Intervention Team were patrolling Silverwood Nature Reserve in Thyrbergh, Rotherham, when they heard desperate shouts for help.
From a high vantage point, they spotted a woman struggling in the freezing lake. She had dived in to rescue her dog, which had slipped through broken ice after chasing a swan.
Without hesitation, PC Jamie Walker plunged into the water, grabbing the frantic dog and helping the woman – who was knee-deep in the lake with her second dog – to shore.
Police Warn: Ice is No Joke
“We share a multitude of advice as the cold weather approaches, but it’s important people don’t think ‘that won’t happen to me,’” said Operational Support Unit Chief Inspector Lee Carlson.
“Routine dog walks might need tweaking. For example, keep your dog on a lead rather than off during icy spells.”
He added, “This incident reminds us how quickly trouble can strike on icy water. Stay vigilant, be aware, and stay safe.”
PC Walker: ‘It Could Have Been So Different’
After drying off and changing at a nearby police station, PC Walker continued his shift. He told us,
“Thankfully, everyone was safe – though some soggy footwear was inevitable. But it could have been very different, especially considering the tragic death in Solihull this week.
“Know where your dogs are playing. Your usual safe spots may not be safe in winter. As seasons change, so do the risks.”
