Leeds Launches Free Bike Security Drive for 3,000 Cyclists

More than 3,000 cyclists in Leeds are set to crackdown on bike theft with a free security marking and registration scheme. Backed by the Active Travel Fund, residents can now protect their rides by registering on the National Cycle Database, managed by Bike Register®.

Secure Your Bike for Free – How It Works

Bike Register® is a ‘Secured by Design’ accredited company running the UK’s top cycle database. You don’t even need their product to register — all you need is your bike’s frame number. Registration is free and boosts the chances of your bike being recovered if stolen.

Events and School Outreach Across Leeds

Security marking events will pop up across Leeds, open to all residents at no cost. Local schools are also joining the campaign to keep young cyclists safe. It’s a hands-on way to fight bike crime while encouraging more people to cycle.

Police and Council Push for a Theft-Free City

“Security marking plays an important role in reducing crime, making items difficult to sell on and increasing the chances of property being returned to owners,” said Paul Denison from West Yorkshire Police Crime Prevention.

“These cycle crime prevention events are increasingly popular, and I would urge anyone who owns a bike to get to one,” he added.

Carrine Thompson-Green from Leeds City Council said: “We are really looking forward to working in collaboration with the Police in delivering bike registration across Leeds. It’s a fantastic scheme and we hope people will take advantage and cycle more.”
