Jozef Puska Murder Trial: Final Showdown at Tullamore Court

The dramatic court battle over the murder of Ashling Murphy reached a fever pitch as both sides delivered their closing speeches. Jozef Puska stands accused of the horrific killing beside the Grand Canal last January. Now, the jury must weigh up the explosive evidence before them.

Prosecutor: “Confession Leaves No Doubt”

Anne-Marie Lawlor, for the prosecution, slammed Puska’s defence as “contaminated by lies”. She highlighted a chilling confession from Puska, where he reportedly admitted to cutting Murphy’s neck. Lawlor insisted the confession was genuine, backed by expert testimony that ruled out medication-induced false admissions.

“Do not believe his fabrications designed to mislead,” Lawlor warned. She pointed to DNA under Murphy’s fingernails and a witness, Jenna Stack, who saw Puska holding Murphy down in the bushes.

Defence Counsels: “Don’t Let Emotion Cloud Judgment”

Michael Bowman, defending Puska, urged jurors to look past grief and sympathy. He acknowledged the tragedy but warned against jumping to conclusions based on emotion rather than facts.

  • He questioned the reliability of witness Jenna Stack, suggesting she may have misunderstood the situation.
  • He criticised the prosecution’s Fitbit evidence as shaky and incomplete.
  • He cast doubt on Puska’s supposed brutality, wondering why a ‘mastermind’ would openly admit to burning clothes if guilty.

Bowman also highlighted Puska’s difficult circumstances—foreign surroundings, recent surgery, and language barriers—that could explain his behaviour. He referenced another man’s emailed confession blaming mental health, questioning why that was taken seriously but Puska’s words were not.

“Use your common sense. Puska did no more than try to help Ashling,” Bowman pleaded.

Jury to Deliberate After Judge’s Summing-Up

With Justice Tony Hunt wrapping up the trial, the jury is set to retire tomorrow to deliver their verdict. The nation waits to see if Puska will be found guilty of one of Ireland’s most shocking murders in recent memory.
