£40,000 of illegal tobacco and vape gear seized in Maidstone store raid

Massive Haul Hits Criminal Networks

Kent Police, backed by Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council Trading Standards, swooped on a Maidstone shop and seized over £40,000 worth of illicit tobacco and vaping products. The raid on Upper Stone Street uncovered almost 20kg of illegal tobacco and roughly 40,000 illicit cigarettes meant to bankroll organised crime.

The total stash, including boxes of dodgy vape goods, had a jaw-dropping estimated value of £45,356.

Secret Storage and Illegal Weapon Found

Officers uncovered two clever hidden compartments, or “hides,” used to stash the goods. One required a strong magnet to open, while the other was hidden behind a modified light switch. Not stopping there, police also found an air-powered revolver being sold without a licence – adding to the criminal gravity.

Health Dangers and Crime Links Exposed

“Counterfeit tobacco and vape products pose serious health risks,” warned PC Tom Cunningham, lead investigator. “They’re not regulated and often contain hazardous chemicals, disgusting ingredients like animal hair, and even human faeces.”

He also revealed the chilling reality of who profits: “These goods fund organised crime networks involved in human trafficking, child sexual exploitation, and drug smuggling.”

“Buying cheap illegal tobacco isn’t just a health hazard — you’re unwittingly backing horrific crimes.”
