Officers Assaulted During Late-Night Incident
Essex Police say the attack happened around 10:30pm on Saturday, when officers responded to reports of an altercation involving three men on North Station Road. Initial reports suggested two men were attacking a third.
During the attempt to arrest the suspects, one officer was knocked unconscious. Another officer was then attacked and strangled from behind by the suspects, police confirmed.
Backup Arrives to Subdue Attackers
Reinforcements soon arrived and managed to bring the assailants under control. Both injured officers were rushed to hospital but have now been discharged following treatment.
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Huddleston praised the courage of the officers, saying, “Policing is rightly scrutinised by the public, given the responsibility the role requires but very often what the public do not see is selfless, brave officers literally moving towards danger to do their job.”
He added that the incident also causes great anxiety among officers’ families, who worry for their loved ones every time they go on duty.
Essex Police Appeal for Witnesses
Essex Police have appealed for anyone with information about the assault to get in touch on 101. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to keep the Colchester community safe.
