Blackwall Tunnel Set for Weekend Southbound Closures in March and April

London’s crucial Blackwall Tunnel is bracing for weekend shutdowns to southbound traffic in March and April. These closures are essential for upgrading the northbound approach as part of the rollout of the new Silvertown Tunnel, slated to open in 2025.

Dates and Details of the Closures

  • Southbound tunnel closed: Saturday 16 March 12:01am to Monday 18 March 5am
  • Southbound tunnel closed: Saturday 13 April 12:01am to Monday 15 April 5am

Work includes installing new over-height vehicle gantries and resurfacing the carriageway to prepare for the new road layout linked to Silvertown Tunnel.

Traffic Disruptions and Alternative Routes

Southbound traffic will be diverted during these weekends, meaning drivers must find alternative routes. Meanwhile, northbound traffic will be rerouted through the southbound tunnel and remains unaffected.

Access to Tunnel Avenue from the A102 at Pear Island will also be closed during the March weekend closures.

Bus route 108, which typically uses the Blackwall Tunnel, will run on altered schedules. Commuters are advised to use the Jubilee line or other alternatives during these times.

Why the Silvertown Tunnel Matters

Once open, the Silvertown Tunnel will offer a green, public-transport-focused Thames crossing featuring zero-emission bus links. It aims to slash congestion, boost reliability, and relieve pressure on the Blackwall Tunnel, leading to cleaner air in the area.

Carl Eddleston, TfL’s director of network management and resilience, stressed the importance of completing the works swiftly to reduce disruption. He also highlighted ongoing improvements around Newham’s Tidal Basin Roundabout, all part of a wider effort to enhance London’s road network.

Transport for London urges drivers to plan ahead and stay updated to avoid jams over the closure weekends. Automatic refunds will be provided to affected passengers where applicable.
