Police Reopen 1983 Godalming Rape Case After Breakthrough DNA Evidence
More than 40 years on, Surrey Police are hunting the “Godalming rapist” after cracking a cold case. A 16-year-old girl was attacked near Broadwater Park Golf Club in 1983. The culprit vanished without a trace — until now.
DNA Breakthrough Sparks New Appeal
Thanks to a cold case review and cutting-edge forensic science, officers have produced a fresh DNA profile of the attacker. The victim was sat reading on grass near Godalming Town Football Club when a middle-aged man with a dog approached and assaulted her. The man calmy walked away with his terrier-type dog towards the A3100 Guildford Road.
Grim Details of the Suspect
- White male, aged 40-50
- Slim build with a paunch
- About 5ft 10in tall
- Light, greying hair, moustache, and short beard
- Carried a small terrier dog, possibly a Yorkshire Terrier
An e-fit was made during the original probe but led nowhere. Now, police urge locals to dig deep and recall anyone who matches this chilling description.
Detective Pleads for Public Help
“We hope someone remembers a neighbour, friend, or colleague who walked with a terrier back in 1983,” said Detective Chief Inspector Jo Hayes. “We also want to find an older woman the victim recalls seeing in the area that day. The victim endured a terrifying ordeal; it’s time for justice.”
“If you have information, no matter how small, come forward. Even if relationships have broken down, you can still help – we keep everything confidential.”
