Thieves Target Elderly at Cash Machines in Tamworth and Lichfield

Staffordshire Police warn residents after two sneaky distraction thefts near ATMs in Tamworth and Lichfield. Stay sharp and don’t fall for their tricks!

How the Scams Went Down

  • On October 25, just after 11:30am, an elderly woman was trailed by two men from a charity shop on Tamworth Street, Lichfield.
  • Inside WHSmith on Bakers Lane, one thief distracted her while the other snatched her purse.
  • Five days later, on October 30 around 10:15am, a man in his 70s was targeted outside Lloyds Bank on George Street, Tamworth.
  • The suspect tried to fool him by pretending to drop a £10 note. Luckily, no belongings were stolen that time.

Classic Distraction Tactics

The crooks use the same old tricks – pretending victims dropped money or valuables to draw attention away. Then they snatch wallets or purses and rush off to make withdrawals using stolen cards.

Police Urge Caution at ATMs

Beware of anyone getting too close when you use a cash machine or bank. Keep an eye on your belongings and don’t let strangers distract you. If you see anything suspicious, report it immediately.
