Five Years On: Justice Still Eludes Elderly Maltby Victim Tommy Ward
It’s been five years since 80-year-old Tommy Ward was viciously attacked in his home on Salisbury Road, Maltby, Rotherham. On 1 October 2015, emergency services rushed to his house after the terrifying assault.
Tommy was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police soon discovered a safety deposit box containing around £30,000 was stolen during the brutal break-in.
Tommy’s Tragic Death After Horrific Attack
Tragically, Tommy died months later on 23 February 2016, with police confirming his death was a direct result of the injuries he suffered during the assault. A murder investigation was launched immediately.
Over the last four years, numerous arrests have been made on suspicion of murder, robbery, and aggravated burglary—but no convictions have followed.
Police Renew Plea for Information
Detective Inspector Lee Nesbeth, deputy senior investigating officer, has issued a fresh appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
“This was a vicious attack on a defenceless, elderly man, which ultimately resulted in him losing his life. Tommy’s death sent shockwaves throughout the Maltby community, which is incredibly tight-knit, and we have worked unrelentingly over the last five years to identify those responsible for this crime.”
“I’m appealing to anyone out there that may still hold information about what happened to come forward. There are individuals who know what happened to Tommy and some have yet to talk to us.”
“I’d ask those people to think about Tommy’s family – his loved ones, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren – who have fought for years for answers.”
How to Help Bring Justice for Tommy Ward
The investigation remains active, with specially trained officers in contact with Tommy’s family. Detectives want justice and closure for the grieving relatives.
