Nottingham’s Old Market Square Shuts for Dramatic Crash Demo

Nottingham’s Old Market Square will be off-limits tomorrow, Saturday 8 April, from around 2pm. Why? Emergency services are staging a gripping live demonstration on the real dangers of drink and drug driving.

Emergency Teams Showcase Crash Rescue Skills

Watch Nottinghamshire Police, Fire and Rescue, East Midlands Ambulance Service, and Nottingham City Council in action. They’ll recreate a crash scene with a trapped victim inside a vehicle. Teams will cut up and dismantle the car while performing vital rescue operations right before your eyes.

“There will be a trapped person in the car so the police and fire and rescue service are going to turn up and help them,” said Sergeant Shakeel Rasul from Nottingham City Centre Neighbourhood Policing. “Community First Responders from EMAS will perform CPR and provide medical care.”

“The public will also get hands-on with CPR practice dummies, police merchandise, sobriety tests, and a QR code questionnaire.”

First-Ever Council-Backed Event to Tackle Drink & Drug Driving

Sergeant Rasul added: “This is the first time such an event has been given permission by the council. It shows the hard work of all partners coming together to make a real impact.”

Part of Deadly Mix Campaign Fighting Drink-Drive Tragedies

The demonstration plugs into Nottinghamshire Police’s Deadly Mix campaign, launched last year after shocking data revealed 263 people were killed or injured in drink-related crashes between 2018-2020.

Over 2,000 posters and 5,000 beermats with hard-hitting messages were sent to Nottinghamshire pubs, while city buses carry similar warnings. A previous event at Trinity Square also saw emergency teams engage with the public to highlight the deadly risks of driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
