Stabbing Horror at Birmingham Nightclub on Boxing Day
Cody Fisher, 23, was fatally stabbed on the dancefloor of The Crane venue in Digbeth just before 11:45pm on Boxing Day, West Midlands Police confirmed. The young man was enjoying a night out with friends when a group approached him, leading to the fatal attack.
Despite emergency efforts, Cody died around 30 minutes after police arrived. His devastated family paid tribute to their “best friend” following the tragic incident.
Revellers Describe “Moody” Crowd and Lax Security
Partygoers have slammed the nightclub’s security checks as woefully inadequate. Sydnee Power, 23, said the atmosphere inside was tense, with “groups of lads” clearly “looking to cause trouble.”
“As soon as me and my friends walked in, we got a very strange vibe and the atmosphere wasn’t good,” Sydnee told the PA news agency. “Most of them looked moody and weren’t there to enjoy the music.”
An 18-year-old from Wolverhampton, who wished to remain anonymous, also criticised the security. “Not once were we asked to clear our pockets, even though mine were full,” he said.
“They just followed the outline of my body with their hands and tapped me to go through. I told my friend, ‘That’s the worst search I’ve ever seen’. Anything could have been brought in by anyone.”
Club Cancels New Year’s Eve Event Amid Police Probe
The Crane has cancelled its New Year’s Eve event, pledging full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
In a statement on Instagram, the venue said:
“We are all deeply shocked and saddened that a man lost his life last night as our Boxing Day event came to a close. Our hearts go out to the victim, his family, and his friends. We urge anyone with information to contact West Midlands Police.”
All ticket holders for upcoming events will be refunded directly by ticket providers, the club confirmed.
Police Appeal for Witnesses as Investigation Continues
Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood, leading the case, urged witnesses to come forward.
“This was a young man enjoying himself on a Boxing Day night out. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. We know hundreds of people were in the nightclub at the time and we need anyone who witnessed or filmed the incident to get in touch.”
The victim was reportedly confronted by a group before the stabbing. Officers are working to identify all involved. The crime scene remains cordoned off while evidence is gathered, and local neighbourhood officers will patrol the area to reassure residents.
