Tragic Baby Death in Portsmouth Sparks Urgent Police Appeal
Police are deeply worried about the wellbeing of a mother after a newborn baby was found dead in Portsmouth at 6:18am on January 25. The infant was discovered near the junction of Victoria Street and Old Commercial Road. Since then, officers have launched a major investigation.
Ongoing Enquiries and Heavy Police Presence
Though the crime scene has been cleared, police continue to patrol the area today. They are conducting house-to-house enquiries and urge locals to approach them with any concerns or information.
Direct Plea to Witnesses and Community
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Baker said: “Our top priority is ensuring the mother’s welfare during what must be an incredibly distressing time. I urge her to seek medical help immediately—whether via a GP, hospital, or walk-in centre.”
DCI Baker revealed police have identified five individuals on CCTV who walked along Old Commercial Road from 5am until the baby was discovered. He made a direct appeal:
“Please contact us, whether you saw anything or not. Your information helps build the picture. If you held back from stopping, that’s not important—we want to hear from you.”
Call for Information from Anyone With CCTV or Dash Cams
Officers are also scanning all CCTV footage and hunting for dash cam clips from vehicles in the area, especially those with continuous recording features.
DCI Baker added: “If you have CCTV or dash cam footage from yesterday morning near Old Commercial Road, please get in touch. Even the smallest detail could be crucial.”
