Police Warn of Surge in Sextortion Cases Targeting Kids
Sextortion scams are on the rise, with criminals using fake dating and social media accounts to trap victims. They befriend people online and convince them to send intimate photos or videos. Then, they threaten to share the content with friends and family unless cash is forked out.
Anyone Can Be a Target – Boys and Girls at Risk
Both males and females fall prey to these vile schemes. Detective Inspector Anthony King from the Child Internet Exploitation Team reveals Wiltshire Police have seen a spike in sextortion reports involving children.
“Young people chat online with strangers who demand indecent images. Once sent, the criminals switch tactics, blackmailing for money and threatening to post the images publicly. It causes major distress when the young person realises what’s happening,” DI King said.
Speak Up and Get Help
If you or someone you know has been targeted by sextortion, don’t suffer in silence. Contact Wiltshire Police on 101 immediately. They promise sensitive handling and proper safeguarding.
Remember: Sharing indecent images of anyone under 18 is illegal. Protect yourself and others by staying alert online.
