Hero Cop Nominated for Bravery Award After Dramatic Dam Rescue
A Dyfed-Powys Police officer has been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024 after a daring rescue at the edge of a 100ft dam.
Terrifying Damside Drama
The drama began when police received a call reporting two dogs had fallen over the Caban Coch Dam. One dog sadly died, the other badly injured. Things turned worse when the caller’s partner tried to save the dogs but fell down the sluiceway, suffering serious facial injuries and a likely broken wrist.
Now, an injured woman was trapped perilously on the dam’s edge, clutching the injured dog – a heart-stopping moment that demanded swift action.
Brave Officers Risk Lives to Save Woman and Dog
PCs Peter Evans and Rhodri Jones rushed to the scene. With mountain rescue 45 minutes away, they knew seconds counted.
PC Jones made a daring move, lowering himself into the dam’s overflow area and onto the sluice edge. Using a throw line, he pulled the woman and dog to safety despite hazardous conditions and no backup close by.

“Rhodri’s nomination is fully deserved,” said Gareth Jones, Chair of the Dyfed-Powys Police Federation. “His calmness and determination in such a distressing moment show true bravery.”
