Police Sergeant Stabbed Responding to Early Morning Disorder in Newport
At around 5:15am this Thursday, April 23, chaos erupted on St Vincent Lane, Newport, when officers rushed to reports of a disturbance. The situation took a shocking turn when a 47-year-old Police Sergeant was stabbed in the abdomen.
Officer Hospitalised After Knife Attack
The injured sergeant, local to Newport, was quickly taken to The Royal Gwent Hospital. He remains in stable condition. His family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers.
Fire Breaks Out at Scene
Shortly after police arrived, a fire erupted at the address. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) responded swiftly, tackling the blaze and carrying out rescues. Another officer, a 33-year-old PC, was treated for smoke inhalation and has since been released from hospital.
Man Arrested on Suspicion of Attempted Murder and Arson
- A man in his thirties from Newport has been arrested.
- He faces charges of attempted murder of a police officer and arson with intent to endanger life.
- He remains in police custody as investigations continue.

“ This is obviously a very concerning incident for us and our officers,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Johnson. “We believe this is an isolated event and are not seeking anyone else connected to it. We urge anyone with information to contact Gwent Police on 101.”
He added a message of gratitude for officers working tirelessly under Covid-19 restrictions: “Our officers put themselves before others day and night to keep communities safe. We wish our injured colleague a speedy recovery.”
