Police Sergeant Stabbed During Early Morning Incident in Newport

A brutal knife attack rocked Newport just after 5am on Thursday, April 23, 2020. Officers were called to a disturbance on St Vincent Lane when a 47-year-old police sergeant was stabbed in the abdomen.

The injured officer was rushed to The Royal Gwent Hospital and is now in a stable condition. His family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist police officers.

Chaos and Fire at the Scene

Moments after the stabbing, a fire broke out at the same address. Firefighters from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) arrived quickly to battle the blaze and carry out rescues.

A 33-year-old police constable also suffered smoke inhalation in the chaos and was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

Suspect Arrested for Attempted Murder and Arson

A local man in his thirties has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.

“This is obviously a very concerning incident for us and our officers,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Johnson. “We have arrested a man from Newport on suspicion of attempted murder and arson. South Wales Fire and Rescue are investigating the fire, and this is an isolated case.”

Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact Gwent Police on 101.
