A major road in Brighton remains sealed off after police discovered explosive substances inside a property on Horton Road. The lockdown started just after 11.30am on Friday, following reports of a strong petrol smell coming from a flat.
Sussex Police Call in Bomb Squad Experts
Specialists from the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team in Portsmouth were rushed to the scene. Armed with a remote-controlled robot and donning full bomb suits, they are working to make the property safe. A large police cordon remains in place while the experts investigate.
Man Arrested – Not Linked to Terrorism
Sussex Police confirmed a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose. A force spokesman said the incident is “protracted” but reassured the public it is not terror-related.
“Officers were called after reports of a strong smell of petrol. We arrested a man on suspicion of possessing an explosive substance,” a Sussex Police spokesman said.
Secondary Device Reported, Evacuations Underway
- Bystanders reported a second device was found in the suspect’s car.
- Paramedics and the South East Coast Ambulance’s HART team have evacuated nearby residents as a precaution.
