Quiet 999 Call Uncovers Life-Threatening Crisis

A silent 999 call could have gone unnoticed – but quick-thinking call handler Megan Turtle at Kent Police’s Force Control Room (FCR) spotted there was more to the case. In the early hours of Thursday, 2 September 2021, Megan answered a call where no one spoke.

Call Handler’s Sharp Skills Save Man on Bridge

Megan ran crucial checks and unearthed that the caller was in serious distress. Using police data, she linked the silent call to a previous incident, spotting a likely suicide risk. Gradually, the man began responding to her questions.

Calm and collected, Megan built trust and pinpointed his exact location. The man had climbed onto the wrong side of a bridge. Thanks to her steady chat, officers arrived just in time to pull him back to safety, ending the drama safely.

Chief Praises Megan’s Quick Thinking

“Megan showed great initiative,” said Chief Inspector Jennifer Bassan. “She used police systems to link cases and react urgently. Her efforts led to a positive outcome.”

Megan Moves On but Leaves Behind a Lifesaving Legacy

Megan, leaving Kent Police this month to start university, reflected on her experience:

“This is the kind of situation we face daily in the control room. The best part is helping people when they really need it.

We’re privileged to make a real difference. Kent Police offers strong support for mental health and trauma – both for staff and those we help. This helps us cope and keep doing our job.”
