Fake Roofers Caught Jet-Washing Homes in Kent – Demanding Big Bucks!
On Tuesday 28 March 2023, Kent Police were tipped off about a gang of men pretending to be roof cleaners. They rocked up at homes and started jet-washing roofs uninvited, then tried to hit residents with hefty bills for the “work.”
When challenged, the bogus workers jumped into a white van and sped off before police arrived.

Police Warn Public to Beware Cold-Calling Scams
Detective Inspector James Wyles of Folkestone’s Community Safety Unit said: “I urge anyone approached by cold callers on their doorstep to seek advice before agreeing to any work or payment.”
“The residents did exactly the right thing by reporting their suspicions to us. Please look out for elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours, and get in touch if you have concerns.”
How to Stay Safe From Rogue Traders
- Always refuse doorstep offers for immediate repairs.
- Don’t be pressured into agreeing to work. If a caller refuses to leave, dial 999.
- Never go to a bank or cashpoint with a trader – real ones won’t ask you to.
- Use vetted traders in the KCC Trading Standards “Trading Standards Checked” scheme.
- Get written quotes and verify the trader’s company credentials before hiring.
