Rushmoor Issues First COVID Penalty to Pub Ignoring Rules

Rushmoor has slapped its first-ever coronavirus fine on a local business after repeated visits and warnings from Hampshire Constabulary and council Environmental Health Officers. The fixed penalty notice was handed out under Regulation 9 (1) of The Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) (No 2) (England) Regulations 2020.

Pub Breaks COVID Rules, Puts Customers at Risk

Police paid a visit to the Mount Pleasant Road pub on October 7, following complaints. They found the business failed to manage food and drink service properly to reduce COVID transmission. Customers were standing at the bar, moving around, and drinking without being seated – all strictly forbidden under the regs.

Council and Police Blast Rule-Breakers

Councillor Maurice Sheehan, Rushmoor’s Cabinet member for Operational Services, said: “I’m amazed at how most businesses cooperate, but shocked by the few who don’t. Their actions put us all at risk.”

He added: “We’ve worked tirelessly since lockdown to support businesses and residents. Having to resort to fines is sad but necessary as COVID cases rise. Our enforcement will be firm but fair. Everyone must do their part.”

PC Phil Dennett, Local Licensing Officer for Hampshire Constabulary, slammed the pub’s behaviour: “It’s very disappointing for a licensed premise to break clear safety rules designed to protect customers and the community during these tough times.”

Stay Informed, Stay Safe

Both council and police urge businesses and residents to follow government guidance found on the GOV.UK website. The message is clear: stick to the rules or face the consequences.
