Brave Officers Rush Into Knife Attack at Leigh-on-Sea Church
On 15 October 2021, police were called to a stabbing at a church in Leigh-on-Sea. PCs Ryan Curtis and Scott James arrived first, unarmed, spotting people fleeing the scene. Despite waiting for a Taser unit, they learned the suspect was still inside, armed and waiting for police. Without hesitation, they stormed inside to confront him.
Knife-Wielding Suspect Faces Down Officers
Inside, the suspect still held the knife. PC Curtis and PC James ordered him to drop the blade while directing terrified members of the public to safety. The attacker began advancing towards them, but the officers kept their cool and persuaded him to let go of the weapon. They swiftly cuffed and arrested him on suspicion of murder.
Desperate Attempt to Save MP Sir David Amess
Additional officers arrived moments later and immediately started CPR on the victim — MP Sir David Amess — despite his severe injuries. Paramedics and a helicopter medical team soon joined, working alongside police in a heartbreaking bid to save his life. Sadly, Sir David died at the scene.
Officers Praised for Courage and Calm Under Fire
“Our main thought was to get there as quickly as possible. We just wanted to stop anyone else from being seriously injured,” said PC Curtis.
“We couldn’t stand outside if there was a chance other people were getting attacked,” added PC James. “Any fears were put to one side.”
Insp Andrew Jopson hailed the team’s response as “amazing” despite some having less than two years’ experience.
Laura Heggie, Chair of the Essex Police Federation, said: “Ryan, Scott, Andrew, James, Daniel, L’Wren and Lily are an absolute credit to Essex Police. They put public safety ahead of their own, showing true bravery.”
Ali Harbi Ali was later handed a whole-life sentence for murdering Sir David Amess.
PC Curtis and PC James received the Essex Police Merit Star from the Chief Constable. They, along with other officers involved, will attend the Essex Police Federation Bravery Awards on 26 May, where the top hero will be announced. The event runs under the hashtag #EssexFedBravery.
