Devizes Community Mourns After Wayne ‘Burt’ Shepphard’s Tragic Death
Wayne Shepphard, 44, known affectionately as ‘Burt’ to friends and family, died in hospital on July 8 following a brutal assault in Devizes’ New Park Street area on the evening of July 2.
A Local Legend with a Heart of Gold
Wayne, from Waiblingen Way, was a well-known figure in Devizes, beloved for his ever-present smile and willingness to help anyone in need. “We have no idea why everyone called him Burt, but we went along with it,” his mother Sandy recalled. “He was such a nice guy, always out and about. Everyone knew who he was.”
His parents, Sandy and Pete, described him as cheeky and sweet, a lively soul with blonde hair and blue eyes who loved tractors and the great outdoors. From a young age, Wayne was drawn to farm life, often sneaking off for tractor rides with his dad.
From Tractor Rides to Engineering – A Life Built on Hard Work
Wayne cherished working with his family on the farm. Pete fondly remembers inspecting potato lines together and teaching Wayne how to fix tractor engines. “He’d tell me I was doing everything wrong and boss me about,” Pete laughed. “He liked being in charge of the shed—he’d come home and joke, ‘Dad doesn’t know what he’s doing.’”
His career journey took him from welding and greenhouse building to engineering. Despite his skills and toughness, Wayne never lost his cheeky charm or generous spirit, always ready with a smile and willing to lend a hand.
Family in Tatters – Heartfelt Tributes from Loved Ones
Wayne’s family is devastated by the loss. His daughter Jessie shared an emotional tribute: “My dad was wonderful, deeply loved by family and friends. He is survived by two heartbroken daughters and our lovely grandparents who adored him. Rest easy now, Dad. Enjoy the fields in heaven. I adore you.”
His other daughter, Chloe, added: “Dad, this world is harsh and you were taken far too soon—you didn’t deserve this. I promise to make you proud every day. I know you’ll be watching over us. Shine brightly and rest in peace. I will always love you.”
Sandy and Pete summed up the community’s grief: “Good night, sweetheart. We miss you terribly. We love you with all our hearts and will always remember you.”
