Hero Dog Oliver Scoops Top Medal for Helping Crime Victims

Oliver, a six-year-old black labrador, has bagged a prestigious medal for his life-changing work with Kent Police. The pooch has been comforting victims and witnesses after traumatic incidents, earning the coveted PDSA Order of Merit in London.

From America to Kent: The Journey of a Special Service Dog

Oliver was brought over from the US in 2018 and trained to support vulnerable victims during police interviews. Working alongside Kent Police and Canterbury Christchurch University, this project is the first of its kind in the UK.

Detective Constable Rachel Freeman, who partners with Oliver, said, “I first met Oliver at our police college while training officers to interview vulnerable victims. I’d seen how dogs like him helped in America and Canada and hoped we’d have one here. Now it’s real.”

A Calm Paw of Comfort When It Matters Most

Oliver’s handlers include psychologist Dr Elizabeth Spruin and Dr Katarina Mozova. DC Freeman explains, “Oliver is so calm, often just sitting quietly by someone’s feet to reassure them. People respond positively, reaching out for cuddles. He can sense emotions – like the time he placed his paw on a young girl’s back to comfort her during tough questions.”

Oliver’s presence eases the nerves of the most vulnerable in the police station. “It’s a scary place for many,” says Freeman, “and having Oliver there helps them through it.”

Recognition for a True Canine Champion

The PDSA Order of Merit is reserved for animals showing exceptional devotion to society. Nina Downing, a PDSA vet nurse, praised Oliver, saying, “We were deeply moved by his life-changing actions. He’s a deserving winner.”

DC Freeman hopes Oliver’s award inspires police forces across the UK to introduce similar support dogs. “I’m so proud of him, and it’s brilliant for raising awareness about this vital work.”
