Man Who Jumped from Chelsea Bridge Was Holding Firelighter, Not Screwdriver

A shocking twist in the tragic Chelsea Bridge incident on June 4 has emerged. Police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), reveals Oladeji Adeyemi Omishore, 41, was carrying a firelighter — not a screwdriver as initially reported — when he was Tasered by officers before plunging into the River Thames.

Stun Gun Fired Multiple Times Before Fatal Leap

Video circulating on social media shows Mr Omishore being Tasered by police and then rushing to the bridge’s edge before jumping over into the river below. The IOPC confirmed the Taser was fired several times during the encounter. Contrary to earlier police claims of a screwdriver, Omishore held a plastic and metal firelighter.

Investigation and Inquest Underway

The IOPC has now officially named Mr Omishore, quashing earlier unconfirmed reports from neighbours. An inquest was opened and adjourned on June 15. Sal Naseem, IOPC’s regional director, expressed sympathy for the family:

“Our hearts go out to Mr Omishore’s family and everyone affected by his death. We are still in contact with his family and keep them up to date on the progress of our independent investigation.”

The watchdog is actively gathering evidence, including eyewitness accounts and video footage from the scene. Naseem urged anyone with information or recordings related to the incident to come forward immediately.

Call for Witnesses as Post-Mortem Awaited

A post-mortem was carried out on June 13, with investigators awaiting a pathologist’s report to confirm the exact cause of death. Authorities emphasise the importance of understanding all circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
