Police Catch Gym Open During Lockdown
Police swooped on a gym in Hackney on Friday, 8 January, after reports it was flouting Covid-19 lockdown rules. Officers arrived at the fitness centre on Stean Street at 9.20am and found three people working out inside.
The owners were told to shut up shop immediately. Non-essential businesses like gyms must stay closed during lockdown, police reminded them.
£1,000 Fixed Penalty Issued
The business bosses now face a £1,000 fixed penalty notice for breaking the law. Chief Inspector Pete Shaw, leading the Covid crackdown in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, laid down the law.
“While people can exercise outside, going to gyms is not allowed under this lockdown. Those who break the rules should expect firm enforcement,” he said. “We thank the vast majority who stick to the guidelines and help lower infection rates.”
