Boxing Day Horror: Bus Plunges into Lake in Norway, 3 Dead
A Boxing Day bus crash in northern Norway has claimed three lives and left several others injured. The bus, carrying 60 to 70 passengers, careened off the road and partially plunged into Åsvatnet Lake in the Hadsel district of Nordland county at around 1:30pm local time.
Deadly Crash Details
The vehicle was travelling on the E10 highway when it smashed through guardrails, slid down a steep slope, and ended up in the lake. Strong winds and heavy snow drifts were reported at the scene, likely contributing to the accident. Four passengers suffered serious injuries and many others were treated for minor wounds.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Ambulances, helicopters, and Red Cross volunteers raced to the site. A nearby school was turned into an emergency shelter. Nordland Hospital declared a red alert and launched a disaster response. Communications Manager Randi Angelsen confirmed extra resources were deployed to manage the unfolding crisis.
Eyewitnesses Describe Chaos
Local residents told of panic and chaos, with emergency crews working round the clock to help victims. One witness said, “There were a lot of emergency services, panic, and chaos at the scene. The helicopter landed just as we were there.” The same resident shared his son’s girlfriend suffered minor injuries and praised the community’s quick support and shelter.
Passengers from Across the Globe
Norwegian broadcaster VG revealed that passengers came from at least eight different countries. The nationalities of the injured have not yet been confirmed.
Officials Launch Full Investigation
Odd Inge Bardal, County Director for Transport and Infrastructure, stated a crisis team is managing transport operations and emergency responses. He said, “The safety and emergency management manager in Nordland County Municipality is participating in a crisis meeting with the local crisis centre.” Authorities suspect severe weather may be to blame and are probing the full cause of the crash.
Community Mourns and Supports
The tragedy sparked sympathy and support across the region. Locals and officials applauded the swift emergency response and the spirit of solidarity shown to victims. Updates will follow as investigators continue their work.
