Virgin Australia Crew Attacked in Shocking Fiji Layover Incident
Night Out Turns Nightmare in Nadi
Two Virgin Australia crew members endured a terrifying ordeal on New Year’s Day after a night out at Nadi’s popular Bar One nightclub. The pair—a man and a woman—were attacked in the early hours while heading back to their hotel. The man suffered facial injuries in a brutal robbery, while the woman was sexually assaulted.
Fiji’s Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew confirmed the grim details: “Unfortunately, two of the crew members were victims of an alleged theft and rape after exiting the nightclub trying to find their way back to the hotel.” Both are now safe in their hotel, receiving support.
Authorities Launch Full Investigation
Fijian police are on the case. A suspect linked to the sexual assault has been identified and questioned, with officials confirming different offenders were involved in the robbery and assault.
Virgin Australia has sent support staff to care for their shaken crew. An airline spokesperson assured, “Our focus is on the wellbeing of our team members affected.”
Officials Issue Warnings, Support Victims
Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame R Gavoka expressed his sympathy: “Our thoughts and concerns are with them and for their health and well-being. These alleged incidents are regrettable.” He urged tourists to exercise caution around nightclubs and late-night areas.
Flight Attendants’ Association of Australia federal secretary Teri O’Toole called the attacks “very disturbing,” reminding everyone such horrors, while rare, do happen.
Investigation Continues as Crew Members Stay in Fiji
Three more Virgin Australia crew remain in Fiji, assisting the investigation and expected to return home by the week’s end. The male victim was treated in hospital and both are now in stable condition.
Virgin Australia and Fijian authorities vow a thorough investigation to bring justice.
