Beware! Phone Scammers Targeting Kent Pensioners Posing as HMRC

Kent Police have issued a stark warning after two pensioners in Tonbridge were targeted by ruthless phone fraudsters posing as HMRC officials. On Monday 20 August 2018, scammers tried to frighten victims by falsely claiming they were wanted for a criminal offence and demanded a call-back to avoid arrest.

Fraudsters Aren’t Playing Fair

One victim received a chilling text message, while the other got a phone call. Both were instructed to ring a suspicious number. Thankfully, neither fell for the scam and reported it straight to police.

Sergeant Andy Gallon of the Tonbridge and Malling Community Safety Unit said:

“These fraudsters often pretend to be from organisations you trust – like banks, police or official agencies. They’re very slick and often know some personal information like your home address and date of birth.”

How to Spot & Stop These Scammers

  • Don’t call back or give out any info if you get a scary message asking for money or personal details.
  • Wait at least five minutes before picking up your phone again to clear any call traps.
  • Always double-check by calling the official organisation using a trusted number from your bills or their website.
  • Talk to a friend or family member if you’re unsure.

Who To Contact If You’re Targeted

If you suspect fraud, call Kent Police on 101 (or 999 in an emergency). You can also report it to Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040.
