Redwood Grove Explosion: Police and Fire Crews Face Lengthy Investigation
Work at the Redwood Grove explosion site is expected to drag on for weeks, police warn. The blast and massive fire caused severe damage, leaving search teams unable to enter the main block of flats anytime soon.
Nearby Flats May Reopen as One Death Confirmed
An adjacent block of flats could reopen to residents by the end of the week. So far, only one death has been confirmed. Authorities have not formally identified the victim but are supporting their next of kin.
Chief Superintendent John Murphy leads the Bedfordshire Police response to the blast, which rocked the area shortly after 9 a.m. yesterday.
“This is a deeply distressing and traumatic incident, and our thoughts remain with the person who tragically lost their life,” Murphy said.
“We don’t know what caused the explosion yet. Several lines of inquiry are open, and we’re working closely with fire services as part of the ongoing investigation.”
“Given the extent of the damage, it might be some time before searching the affected site can safely begin. We cannot rule out further fatalities.”
Support for Residents and Community Efforts
Firefighters have carried out reassurance visits around the affected area. An emergency assistance centre remains open at the John Bunyan Centre in Bedford for those needing help.
From tomorrow, an information centre opens at the Harpur Suite in Bedford town centre, operating weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The local community has rallied generously, donating to evacuees. Meanwhile, mental health specialists and Bedfordshire’s education team have been supporting local schoolchildren with wellbeing sessions.
Fire Service Confirms No Main Gas Supply, Investigation Ongoing
Trevor Gradwell Smith, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue’s operational assurance manager, said the fire service is continuing its complex investigation but has found no main gas supply at the premises.
“We’re working closely with police and Urban Search and Rescue teams to ensure the building’s structural safety,” he said.
“A response presence will remain on site, and fire crews will perform ‘Safe and Well’ home visits, offering fire safety advice to local residents.”
Police Commissioner Pays Tribute and Reassures Public
Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Festus Akinbusoye expressed condolences to those affected.
“I am shocked and saddened by the loss of life. My thoughts are with the injured, including one of our firefighters,” he said.
“I thank our emergency services for their tireless efforts to keep residents safe as investigations continue.”
Police have set up an information centre for concerned relatives to report worries or get updates. Family and friends can also call 0800 051 6085 for assistance.
