Ex-Copper John Smith Found Guilty of Gross Misconduct Over Drink-Drive Conviction
A Misconduct Hearing took place on Thursday, 26 November, focusing on former Detective Sergeant John Smith, who was previously stationed at AW (Central West).
Drink-Driving Conviction Sparks Police Probe
Smith faced serious allegations of discreditable conduct, breaching the police’s Standards of Professional Behaviour.
On 27 July 2020, he was convicted at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court for driving under the influence of alcohol. The court handed down a 24-month driving ban and slapped him with a £692 fine.
Gross Misconduct Verdict Means Swift Dismissal If Still Serving
The hearing, led by Assistant Commissioner Helen Ball, ruled Smith’s actions amounted to gross misconduct.
Had he remained a police officer, Smith would have been dismissed without notice.
