A central London theatre district remains closed as police continue investigations into a serious car crash that occurred on Christmas Day.
Emergency services were called to Shaftesbury Avenue at 12:45 am on December 25 after reports of a car driving on the wrong side of the road. Four people were injured in the incident and taken to hospital, with one victim remaining in a life-threatening condition.
Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions
As of December 26, Shaftesbury Avenue remains closed in both directions between Wardour Street and Rupert Street, according to AA Traffic. The closure is causing significant disruptions in the area, with multiple bus routes being diverted.
The cordon stretches between two major theatres: the Gielgud Theatre, currently hosting the musical Oliver, and the Sondheim Theatre, home to Les Misérables.
Arrest Made
The driver, a 31-year-old man, was arrested shortly after the crash on suspicion of attempted murder. Police believe the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nearby nightclub prior to the incident. He allegedly mounted the pavement in the busy theatre district, leaving chaos and injuries in his wake.
Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy confirmed the incident was not terror-related and described it as isolated.
“Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes,” Cundy said. “Detectives are quickly progressing enquiries as part of this investigation. Several scenes remain in place at the location today.”
Scene Investigation
Bloodstains and items of clothing, including shoes and jackets, were left scattered across the pavement in front of a Caffe Concerto near the crash site. Forensic teams were seen bagging evidence as part of the investigation.
