Social Worker Stabbed During Welfare Check in Haringey
Knife Attack Shocks Local Community
Just before 8pm on Friday 6 August, police rushed to Noel Park Road, N22, after a social worker’s welfare check on children was blocked. When officers forced their way into the building, the 61-year-old Haringey Council social worker was stabbed multiple times in the communal area.
Two police officers who tried to restrain the attacker were also wounded by the knife but have since been discharged from hospital.
Suspects Held, Investigation Underway
A 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody. Two more men were detained nearby as police work to determine their role in the incident.
The injured social worker remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have arranged support for the children involved.
Police and Council Speak Out
Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming said: “I am appalled at this shocking attack. Social workers are vital in protecting vulnerable people. We will do all we can to bring the attacker to justice.”
“I pay tribute to the officers who risked their lives to help and will support them fully as they recover.”
She added, “This horrific event highlights the deadly threat knives pose across London. Tackling violent crime remains our top priority.”
Haringey Council Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet and Chief Executive Zina Etheridge said: “Our thoughts are with the social worker and officers. We are relieved everyone is expected to recover.”
“Social workers do an incredibly important and often dangerous job. We thank them and the police for their bravery.”
“We will provide full support to the injured and to our teams affected by this trauma.”
