UK Government Adds 350 New Medical School Places for 2025
The UK government has announced it will add 350 new medical school places in England for the 2025/26 academic year. This bold move supports the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, aiming to tackle the country’s doctor shortage.
£2.4 Billion Boost to NHS Staffing
Backed by over £2.4 billion in funding, the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan is the biggest training expansion in NHS history. Its goal? To double medical school places in England to 15,000 by 2031 and reduce regional doctor shortages.
The Office for Students (OfS) has allocated these new places strategically, focusing on under-doctored areas. This follows last year’s early rollout of 205 additional spots for 2024/25.
Top Officials Back the Medical School Surge
Health and Social Care Secretary Victoria Atkins said the government is committed to building a stronger healthcare workforce. “Doubling medical school places is vital to meet the nation’s healthcare needs,” she stressed.
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan echoed the message, celebrating the fresh opportunities for future doctors.
Amanda Pritchard, NHS England Chief Executive, hailed the move as “a crucial step towards better patient care.”
Dr Katie Petty-Saphon, CEO of the Medical Schools Council, welcomed the focus on widening access and recruiting in areas most in need.
Focus on Underserved Areas and New University Support

This effort builds on a 25% expansion completed in 2020, which created five new medical schools and raised yearly places to 7,500.
Future Plans for a Stronger NHS Workforce
The government and NHS England will keep collaborating with medical schools, NHS trusts, and the General Medical Council to push through ambitious reforms. With ongoing investment and teamwork, they aim to beat their targets and secure a sustainable future for UK healthcare.
