Flood Alert Issued for Cuckmere River
The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Cuckmere River and its tributaries, stretching from Vines Cross to Exceat Bridge. Flooding is possible, so residents should stay alert and be prepared.
Heavy Rain to Batter the Area
Persistent, heavy rain is expected on Sunday and Monday, with up to 60mm – that’s nearly half a month’s worth of rain – set to fall. Minor flooding is likely, but if the rain hits the higher end of forecasts, property flooding could occur.
From 10pm on 18 December, flooding could affect fields, rural roads, and gardens near Mill Lane, Hellingly, Grove Hill by Grovebridge Farm, and Hammer Lane close to Cowbeech.
Flooding to Hit Key Roads and Properties
- From 4am on 19 December, properties along Station Road, Church Lane, and Church Road could see flood impacts.
- By 2pm that day, North Street, Willows Car Park, River Lane, The Old Clergy House, and Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston may also be affected.
More rain on Monday morning and evening may push the Cuckmere and Bull Rivers higher, keeping river levels elevated throughout the week. Drivers should avoid vulnerable routes like Mill Lane and Church Road in Hellingly and North Street in Alfriston.
