Turkey Sends Rescue Puppy to Carry On Hero Dog’s Legacy
Turkey has gifted Mexico a rescue puppy to carry on the heroic legacy of Proteo, the Mexican search dog who died while hunting for earthquake survivors.
Tragedy Strikes in Turkey and Syria
The devastating earthquake claimed over 50,000 lives across Turkey and parts of Syria. link="linked">Mexico swiftly deployed search-and-rescue teams, including canine units, to assist in the grim task.
The New Pup’s Big Name Decision
The adorable new arrival from Turkey is still awaiting a name. Mexico’s military ministry has called on the public to vote for one of three options: Proteo II, Arkadas (which means “friend” in Turkish), or Yardim (“help” in Turkish).
A ministry spokesperson hailed Turkey’s gift as a symbol proving “humanitarian aid knows no limits or borders.”
Warm Welcome for the Brave New Recruit
The puppy’s journey was tracked from Turkey to Mexico City via a ministry tweet. Defence staff greeted the canine hero warmly at the airport, where dog trainers stood to attention, carrying their own pups in rucksack-style pouches.
Mexico, frequently hit by earthquakes, boasts elite military and civilian rescue dog teams famous for saving lives – including during the 2017 Central Mexico quake.
Remembering Proteo: A Fallen Hero
Proteo tragically died in Turkey from exhaustion after arduous search efforts in freezing conditions, not from falling rubble as once feared. His body was returned to Mexico for a moving farewell ceremony.
The Defence Ministry said it is “waiting with open arms” for Turkey’s new puppy, hoping it will “follow in his paw steps” and continue saving lives for years to come.
