HGV Driver in Serious Condition After Shocking M2 Crash Closes Both Carriageways

M2 Shut Between Maidstone and Gillingham

The M2 motorway was shut tight between junction 3 (Maidstone/A229) and junction 4 (Gillingham/A278) after a heavy goods vehicle narrowly avoided a dangerous crossover incident. Both carriageways remain closed as emergency services tackle the aftermath.

Emergency Crews Rush Injured Driver to Hospital

The driver, seriously hurt in the crash, was treated at the scene before being rushed to William Harvey Hospital. South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed they were called just after 3.10pm. Paramedics were backed up by the air ambulance crew, but the driver was transported by road rather than air.

“I can confirm we attended a serious road traffic collision involving an HGV,” said a South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman. “The man received immediate care and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.”

Major Recovery Operation Causes Overnight Chaos

The crash badly damaged a large stretch of crash barriers, forcing salvage teams into a major recovery and repair mission. The motorway remained closed overnight, with the closure only lifted after 3am on Wednesday morning, causing significant disruption for commuters.
