Met Police Team Up with Levi Roots for Community Cook-Along
Officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit joined forces with celebrity chef and entrepreneur Levi Roots at Ark Evelyn Grace Academy on Tuesday, 30 March. Together, they packed and distributed 150 food parcels to vulnerable children and families in Lambeth.
Inspired by Lockdown Hardship
The idea came from Lambeth schools officer PC Nigel Pearce. He was moved by the struggles many local families faced during the coronavirus pandemic. Between the first and second lockdowns, the number of students from vulnerable families at Ark Evelyn Grace doubled from 70 to 150.
“During home visits, we saw some families had nothing to eat. It was heartbreaking,” said PC Pearce. “That’s when I knew we had to do something more.”
He dreamed up a community cook-along – a chance for families to gather around a nutritious meal, learn new skills, and feel supported.
Levi Roots Brings Caribbean Flavour and Inspiration
PC Pearce wanted someone with local roots and a story that could inspire. He turned to Brixton-born Levi Roots, who jumped at the chance.
“The aim was to provide a nutritious meal families could cook and enjoy together,” said PC Pearce. “Levi’s journey of hard work and success makes him the perfect role model for our young people.”
Levi added: “I was happy to be involved in this great project. It brings the community together at a time when so many are struggling. I hope I can put some music in their food!”
Food Parcels and Virtual Cook-Along Delight Families
Early on 30 March, police officers prepared 150 food parcels containing ingredients for Levi’s Caribbean spiced cottage pie, plus staples like pasta and rice. Tesco generously donated £2,000 worth of gift cards to support the event.
Families collected their parcels from the academy, which included a recipe card and a link to the virtual cook-along streamed live from the school at 5pm. Levi cooked alongside teachers and students, guiding families through the recipe.
While the pies baked, Levi shared his inspiring story of determination and success, encouraging children to overcome obstacles.
PC Pearce thanked everyone involved: “This was a real team effort. We couldn’t have done it without the support from Levi, Tesco, the school staff, and of course the community.”
